OPELOUSAS, LA  -- Students from Port Barre Middle School and North Central High School will be participating in the Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) Program.  This program is “a comprehensive childhood-to-career program to inspire, educate, and train children and young adults from underserved schools and communities to pursue careers in computer science. Amazon Future Engineer offers qualified middle schools access to exploratory computer science classes through Project STEM.”   Schools selected for this program will receive these courses, dedicated implementation and ongoing support at no cost.

Thanks to the efforts and dedication of their AP Computer Science Principles teacher, Mrs. Jessica Quebedeaux, students in grades  9-12 at North Central High School and Port Barre Middle School will have a unique opportunity to become involved in this exciting program, opening doors to STEM-related careers.

After submitting the application in early January, she received word of acceptance on January 28th. The application process was very straightforward. The acceptance includes a CSTA-Plus membership, Code.org curriculum, AWS Educate resources, and promotional materials to help spread the word to potentially interested students.

Mrs. Quebedeaux will begin adding the Code.org curriculum to her classes beginning next year. This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn coding and app creation from different perspectives.  Currently, they are learning in Python, and will now have the opportunity to cross-train in block or scratch style programming. Mrs. Quebedeaux said today, "I have a deep passion for Computer Science and Technology Innovation that I’m honored to be able to share this with my students.  I strongly recognize the importance of providing them with every opportunity to enhance their knowledge!"
