I want to...
By now, you have likely heard news reports about the coronavirus also called COVID-19. Due to the media attention given to this health situation, and because our priority is the health of our students and employees, we want to share some basic information about the coronavirus and how The St. Landry Parish School System is prepared to address this medical condition should it become a concern in our district.
As we are monitoring this situation, we are enhancing existing protocols and providing additional resources to our schools, including:
Distributing cleaning agents to all schools and asking that teachers, staff, bus drivers, and custodians wipe down handrails and other high traffic area places
Providing schools with print material to display in bathrooms that will encourage hand washing
Disseminating information relevant to the coronavirus via the district website and social media
St. Landry Parish School System staff is proactively monitoring this health concern and will take any and all precautions necessary to prevent this from becoming a wide-spread illness that affects our students and our staff. We are asking that any staff member or student that has recently traveled out of the country or to a state where there are known cases of the virus, please notify the school administrator so that a close watch can be kept on the health of that individual in the coming weeks. For more information about travel risks, you can visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Travel Information page which is linked here.
Coronavirus symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Other less commonly exhibited symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, and sputum production. The CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure. If your child or staff member is experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, please refrain from attending school and seek medical attention for the proper diagnosis. We urge you to speak to your children about how to help stop the spread of germs and illnesses. The district has obtained information from the CDC and has compiled that information here: http://www.slpsb.org/apps/pages/coronavirus_information.
The St. Landry Parish School System's health team and administration will work with the local health department and the Office of Emergency Preparedness to stay informed and up to date with information on the coronavirus. The school district will follow all directives to reduce exposure in schools and administrative offices.
For additional information, you can visit the Louisiana Department of Public Health website at www.ldh.la.gov and the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. We will continue to update you as we receive new information from our public health agencies.
